Embark on a journey through the streets of Philadelphia, a city where the present is built atop the past and the future is waiting to be written. Guided by an expert archaeologist, this isn't your standard stroll into the high school history books. This is an exploratory adventure that focuses on three compelling themes—Liberty, Money & Power, and The City. You'll walk where the founding fathers tread, feeling the weight of their ideas and ideals. From the storied chambers of Independence Hall to the iconic Liberty Bell, we don't just point and narrate. We spark dialogue, ignite curiosity, and foster a sense of wonder. These aren't just landmarks; they're time machines to the past. Each stop is carefully curated to be more than just a photo-op. It’s an invitation to interact—to touch, to think, to question. We'll focus on three themes and their three stories.

    Liberty: Earned, not Given

Journey through Independence Square and feel the global impact of the Declaration of Independence. Stand beside the architectural marvel that is Independence Hall, where America's founding elites convened not just on a whim, but driven by revolutionary fervor. We'll discuss the meaning of liberty, who liberty belongs to, and the continued story of earning that liberty. Here, history isn't just told—it's relived. From the fervor of intellectual debates to the complexities of the men behind them, you'll experience liberty as a living, breathing entity.

Money & Power: The Power of the Dollar

We'll set the stage for America's early financial landscape, from the birth of its Constitution to the tumultuous debates that shaped it. From the birthplace of a nation to the beginnings of a government, we'll understand the role that money played in forming the foundations of the country we still walk on today. Walk by the First and Second Bank of the United States buildings, touching the very walls that witnessed America's economic evolution. Imagine how Alexander Hamilton walked these steps to forge his own way. Discover how power and money were the bricks and mortar that built the nation, with Philadelphia as the architectural blueprint.

The City: If These Streets Could Talk

We pivot from lofty ideals of nation to the tangible cityscape of Philadelphia. No less impactful, how does the city around us change? As the United States only UNESCO World Heritage City, we are surrounded by history. Who decides what is worth preserving? How does the city shape us and how do we shape the city? Journey through time as we explore Society Hill's historical illusions, architectural influencers like Ed Bacon and William Penn, and archaeological remnants at Franklin Court. Learn to see the city not just as a backdrop but as a central character in the American story.   Your journey culminates in a newfound connection, not just to history, but to a community of fellow travelers. This isn't just a tour; it’s a shared voyage into our collective past. Step into the hidden layers of Philadelphia and emerge transformed. Are you ready to unearth history?

    What You'll See

    Meeting Point

We will meet in front of La Colombe, located across the Liberty Bell Center. There are a number of chairs in that plaza. Your guide will be there.

Address: 1020 South St, Philadelphia, PA 19147

    Ending Point

We will end at a different location – Elfreth’s Alley

Over the course of the tour we will walk about 2.5 miles. You will be about 1 mile from our starting point. Both locations are accessible by SEPTA’s Market-Frankford line. If parking, we recommend a parking garage. While street parking is available, most street parking only covers 2 hours.

Will we go into Independence Hall?

No, we will only see it from the outside. Entry into Independence Hall is controlled by the National Park Service. For entry into the main structure, you can reserve time tickets through the NPS website at Recreation.gov. Tickets are available in advance, with next-day tickets released 5PM before tours the next day. The two buildings to the left and right of the central structure do not need tickets. You can go into Old City Hall (home to the US Supreme Court) from the street, located on the corner of Chestnut & 6th streets. Every 20 minutes there is a non-ticketed tour of Congress Hall, where you'll need to pass security (located in front of Independence Hall on Chestnut Street).

    Is this tour for children?

While there is nothing inappropriate for children, this tour is designed to be more in-depth than most tours of Philadelphia Old City. Particularly precocious children may get some value out of the tour. Most children are likely to enjoy a more mass-market tour. (If you, the parent, really want to take the tour, the children are more than welcome! This is more of a warning for the sake of the kids).
